Why Going It Alone is Overrated in Direct Sales

There’s a belief in the direct sales world that you have to hustle hard and do everything solo to prove you’ve “made it.” But after years in the industry and hundreds of conversations, I can confidently say—going it alone is overrated.

In a recent episode of The Other 99% podcast, I sat down with Susan Larimer and two inspiring women from the Modern Direct Seller Academy: Vicki Hinkle-Legassie and Dawn Hudson. Both are ambassadors with Tastefully Simple, and their story beautifully illustrates how community and collaboration can make all the difference.

From Struggling Solo to Flourishing Together

Many people join direct sales feeling isolated, especially if they’ve had previous experiences where success seemed out of reach. That was Dawn’s story. Before joining Tastefully Simple, she felt like a failure in the industry. Despite trying multiple companies, she couldn’t gain traction—until she found not only the right product but also the right people.

Her connection with Vicki didn’t start with a team relationship. They weren’t upline or downline. But a leadership conference sparked a friendship that quickly grew into something more powerful: a business support system that helped them both succeed.

The Power of a Sideline Sister in Direct Sales

One of the biggest myths in network marketing is that you’re on your own unless you’re directly connected to someone’s team. Vicki and Dawn proved otherwise.

A Daily Dose of Encouragement and Strategy

They describe themselves as “sideline sisters”—two women working independently but united in their goals. They check in daily, brainstorm strategies, and support each other through business highs and lows.

They didn’t let geography or team structure stop them. Even when they lived near each other in Maryland, they embraced collaboration over competition. That mindset helped them grow faster and enjoy the journey more.

Why Collaboration Beats Competition in Direct Sales

Dawn shared that early in her journey, she felt the pressure to compete, especially in a crowded market. But after moving to Alabama and becoming the only local rep, she realized how much she missed the camaraderie of her former peers.

That shift in perspective led her to embrace community over competition—a key factor in sustainable direct sales success. When you focus on building authentic relationships, everyone wins.

Let This Be Your Reminder: You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Whether you’re brand-new or a seasoned pro, here’s your reminder: you don’t have to hustle in isolation.

Find your people. Build your support system. Seek out your version of a sideline sister. As Dawn and Vicki demonstrate, when you surround yourself with encouragement, ideas, and laughter—you rise faster, stronger, and happier.
