Episode 28 Transcript

Hey everyone, it is me Lisa and welcome back to another episode of the other 99%. I am so excited to have my friend Evelyn here to join us today. Now, Evelyn, I just need to tell you that when I first met you in the Modern Direct Seller Academy, I thought that you had just it all put together. You present yourself so well. I, and I’m like, wow, this lady has a lot to share. So when I got to know you more, um, from doing with you and helping you through your own my high and stuff like that. I’m just like, I had to reach out to you and say, would you be a guest on the podcast? So I’m so excited that you’re here. And I would love for you just to give the listeners a little bit of an introduction. Tell us who you are, what you do and all that stuff.

Oh, well, Lisa, thank you so much. I so appreciate you because I feel the same way about you. I’m like, this lady is so amazing. I am so privileged to know you. So I know you’re in Canada. So I am here in the US. I am specifically in the Los Angeles area of California. And I’ve been here since middle school. So I’m…pretty much my home now for sure. I started off, my dad was in the military, so we got to travel quite a bit. But I have been here, I’ve been married for 30 years. I have one adult daughter. And one of the fun things about me is that I love live theater. I have season passes to the theater. I am fortunate enough to live close to the beach, so I get to do my beach walks. I…What else is there to fight about me? Most people know me as the purple, loving, tea drinking, chocolate lover lady. That’s definitely who I am. Awesome. And what company are you with, Evelyn? I have been with Jaffra Cosmetics for the last 24 years. That’s amazing. It’s a gift to myself, literally. It’s like…I loved all the products, my husband, my daughter and I, we all used the products. My daughter was about two years old when we started and I’m like, if Jaffer made it, we used it. Yeah, we used everything. So it’s like, it just made sense to transition to getting the products. Now I can tell you, I had zero aspirations of doing it as a business, absolutely zero not my forte. Most people, and this is really funny, most people when they meet me, they think that, well, I wouldn’t say when they meet me, but when they get to know me, they think of me as an extrovert. Because I’m all in, I love to love on people. I love learning from people and learning about people. So I’m all in. But honestly, I’m really more of that shy, introverted person. Too hard, too core, that’s who I am, But I discovered this new term, like kind of like the middle balance between the two and pervert. And I say that I fall more than ampervert. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, yeah. Zero interest in telling as a matter of fact, I remember my upline gave me a little pin to wear. And I would wear it. But I would cover it up. Want to talk to people like I don’t know if I can talk to people.

That’s so funny because I remember my Mary Kay days. Our goal was that we put the pin on upside down. Yeah. Every time somebody made a comment about our pin, it was like, oh my God, thank you so much for noticing. How embarrassing of me, you know? That’s like, I would love to offer you a hand pampering session just for your troubles, right? And I’m like, no, no, I can’t do that. No, I always have some covering up, you know, and then the real thing is like, stand in the longest lines, you can talk to people like, I don’t want to, you don’t understand who I am. But slowly, as people got to know that I sold Jaffra, it was two things they would ask, do you have Royal Jelly? That is our signature product in the company. Or sometimes they can remember the name and I’ll just say the B stuff or they will say, do you have oil? I’m in oil, which is our thing. It’s a very iconic body oil is wonderful. So slowly I was just helping people, you know, with getting products here and there. So getting my super great discount became to really starting getting it for free because I just turned the money over of what I would sell and then get my products. Then I noticed Wow, I’m able to play a bill here and there. And then really it still wasn’t a business, it was just a fun hobby. But nine years ago, I had to transition and make an income. And still, Jaffer was not my first thought. Because that’s just not who I am. I can’t sell anything, you know. So I went back to work for a little while. I was still homeschooling my daughter. We were near the end. I homeschooled her from kindergarten through 12th grade. And we were near the end and we didn’t wanna give that up, but I was also doing some caregiving. It was so much going on. I’m like, this was just too much. And I heard people can make money selling this stuff. Well, let me give it a try. And it took you how many years? to figure that out, right?

I know, yeah, yes, exactly, exactly. It’s so true. And I mean, some people jump into this business and they’re ready to go and it’s like, okay, they see the opportunity and they take it. And then others like you and myself, like we come in and it’s like just a slow process. And I love that about direct sales because everybody could come in here and do the business the way they wanna do it. And I say, if you’re over the age of 18 And I don’t know what the legal age in the States is, but up here, you have to be like 18, 18 here too. You need to try direct sales at least once and not just any company. You need to, to follow a company that actually speaks to you, a products, products that you love, that you are not afraid to endorse and stuff like that. Because you just never know where this business can take you. Like there are ladies in this, this, like these companies making six figures and more. And, and so it’s like, it’s just amazing. And, and that’s great if you want to do that. But I mean, if you would just want to come in and you want to make an extra one to $200 a month, like you did to pay a bill here and there, that’s great too, but it’s there for you. So I absolutely love that. I love that about this company or this, this business model anyway.

Well, you know what, let me add to that a little bit. I’m I absolutely 100% agree because it really changes who you are. You become, you know, a little bit more, um, more confident in who you are and you get to develop yourself. As a matter of fact, that’s one of the things that I am most proud of. And what I do in my business is it’s a personal growth that I’ve had. Um, so I, so I, I’ve gone more from that introverted person to be a little bit more open and growing socially. Before I was doing this, and before I became a mom, I go back that far, I was a teacher. So I’m very comfortable with younger kids, you know, having my own classroom and working with kids. And then I was a Girl Scout leader for several years. So I’m really comfortable with kids, but I was just never, I was always a around adults. So it really helped me to grow and who I am. So that’s been great. So yeah, I agree. Everyone should just jump in and try it. Just try it. Exactly. All right, Evelyn.

So I’d love for you to share with us and share with the listeners. How are you currently running your business? Well, you know, I am pretty much I could say probably 95% online now, which is so different from how I started off in the business. So I’m on YouTube a lot. Actually, I’m probably more on Instagram a lot, just doing reels and giving value how I can, teaching people. My main thing is teaching people how to age well, but that’s my main thing. I talk more, not just about products and what the products can do for you and all the benefits of our wonderful product line. But I want to teach people how to age well holistically. Everything working together, exercising, eating habits, your sleeping habits. So I’m on the channels just kind of teaching that. I love that I get to blog. I mentioned that I’m a past educator. So for me, just being able to do however I can to teach people something. I swear to you. So yeah, pretty much where you’ll find me when I’m doing my business, because I’m not out and about like I used to be. Yeah, and I noticed that you’ve almost blossomed into that because I’ve noticed a lot more of you lately on your Reels and on YouTube. So it wasn’t something that you were doing all the time. And then all of a sudden you just, got into it and said, this is working for me, which I love. And you know what, you just come out and you’re natural. Like you’re Evelyn as Evelyn needs to be. And people love you for that, I’m sure. So I like that you do that. I follow your reels all the time. I just kind of feel like that I’m pretty coachable. So if I learn something, I want to implement it and run with that. So and I don’t There’s a whole lot more people that’s much better than me and what they’re doing, but I’m authentically me. Yes, you are. And I’m loving what I’m doing, so, not a bad. Awesome.

So I know that you mentioned earlier that you were proud of the personal, the advancements that you’ve made, the personal growth that you’ve got through direct sales. Is there any other thing that you’ve..received or maybe an achievement that you got in your direct sales career that you’re proud of? And so that’s really funny because it really leads into what we’re just saying. I earned from our company the top micro influencer award. And that’s huge for me because honestly, if it wasn’t for direct sales, it wasn’t for this business that I’m doing, I don’t know how much I would be online. I don’t know how much I would be advancing and because again, I’m just not that computer literate person. I have grown so much into that. It’s just amazing the different things that I get to do and how I get to do things like building a website from scratch, I don’t even know the language. So, yeah, just earning different awards. I’ve earned a trip with the company. So it’s just been fun. Just being proud of the little things I get to do. And what I love about it is I’m getting rewarded for things that I would do anyway. So it’s really kind of like that bonus. I just love being able to give back to people and just connect. Yeah.

Well, if there’s one thing that I want the listeners to take from you is you are doing awesome things in your business because you show up. And when I mean that is like, when we’re having training sessions about your website on how to build and how to like maybe enhance or make things better, you show up and then you do the work. So, I mean, you’re seeing great success with that. And it’s so true because you always hear that saying, those who show up, go up. So, you are doing great things.

All right, so I always say. Everybody always has a superpower in their business. There’s one thing that they excel at. What is Evelyn’s superpower? I think my superpower is training. I just think it’s because of the teacher side of me just comes out. It’s so natural. Um, and, and when I’m saying training, that could be a multi-fold. So training my team, teaching people how to take care of their skin. Um, doing my blog posts, doing an Instagram reel, how I get to train people and show people, um, how basically what I’m showing people is this is what I use. This is how I use it. And here’s why this is my exercise I’m doing. Here’s why here’s the shake that I have. Here’s why. So, so those are things I love doing. Um, also I would say building community. I just find that we as women, especially don’t take the time to slow down and relax. And so I have a monthly meetup that I do for my clients, for my friends, for my consultants. It’s called Girls and Giggles night. Every month is a new theme and it has something to do with business at all. It’s just a time to come together and connect, build relationships. So I like to be that person to help other people, to build relationships and to connect and have fun. We just don’t have enough fun. People are busy, busy, busy to the next day and you gotta slow down. So true. Part of aging well. Yes, yes, I agree.

All right, so I always ask this of all of our guests. Is there one quote or a piece of advice that you’ve heard in your years of direct sales that you just think that every direct seller needs to hear to do better. Yes, this is definitely something for every direct seller and everyone in general, everyone can use this piece of advice. Several years ago, I was listening to a workshop and the speaker came on and talked about, she said, everything is figure out a ball. Okay, so we know that’s not a real word. That concept is, Everything. I don’t know, I don’t care what it is. Every single thing that you need to do, you can figure it out. There’s coaches, there’s YouTube, there’s Google. There’s so much out there. Anything you wanna know, you can figure it out. There’s resource. So true. All right.

Well, I know that our listeners are probably gonna wanna find Evelyn on the World Wide Web. So where should they head to find you? So World Wide…web, I will tell you. So since it’s my goal for every woman to look, feel, and be royal, you should check out my website. It is keep But if you’re looking for me in social, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, all the places, even LinkedIn, I am at Purple Essence by Evelyn. Awesome. I will make sure I link those in the show notes. And I just wanted to thank you so much for being a guest. I absolutely love chatting with you and I hope everybody enjoyed listening to what Evelyn had to say and we will see you on the next episode of the other 99% everyone take care. Thank you, Lisa.
