Episode 39 Transcript

Hey everyone, it is me Lisa and welcome back to another episode of the other 99%. Today I wanted to talk to you about something that I’m sure that we’ve all have faced in our journey through our direct sales business, and that’s comparison. And I know that sometimes comparison can lead to many negative things, but I wanna try and talk to you today and give you some tips on how to navigate around that comparison game and not letting it lead you down that dark rabbit hole instead letting it use it to lift you up and help you go on to your next goal. So there’s a couple points that I want to talk about. And number one is we all know that comparison is natural, but it can be very, very, very unproductive looking at something and you’re looking at say somebody else’s sales that you’re not letting it frustrate you to the point where it’s like, oh my God, why am I so bad at doing this? I like, I suck at doing this. Look at how good they are.

Everybody is in this business for their own reason. And you never ever know the person’s why direct sales. So I just want to look at it this way. So maybe the reason why you’re in direct sales is that you want some freedom in your schedule and you don’t want to be tied to a nine to five job or you don’t want to be working part-time all weekend or something like that. And you just need to maybe make a couple hundred dollar to meet your goals, like to meet your, you being able to stay home from that weekend part-time job. But you’re comparing yourself to somebody who’s why possibly could be, they need to meet mortgage payment by the end of the week. So they have to have those five parties going, because without those five parties, they won’t bring in that money to make that mortgage payment. The reason why they might be successful, their why might be because they have this business as a full-time job and they can’t sit around and run their household on one to $200 a week. They need that five, six, $700 weekly paycheck in order to meet their bills and be able to run their full-time business.

So you never know why people are doing the business. So that’s why it’s very important not to compare yourself to other people and always focus on you, focus on your why. And I bet you if you went back and listened to my very first episode, you can hear me saying about, you know what? I set my own goals and I know that I am successful because I achieve my goals. Am I the top in the company? Absolutely not. But do I achieve the goals that I set out for myself? I do. So I’m successful in my business and that’s okay for me. So I just want you to think about that. Just know that comparing yourself to somebody else in the business is totally natural, but don’t let it frustrate you because then you’re gonna fall into that unproductive state. You’re just gonna be like, oh, well, why can they do that? And why can’t I do that? and it’s just not gonna get you anywhere.

Okay, so just make sure you understand your journey, why this business is important to you. Set your goals and make sure that you achieve the goals that you set out. Now, another thing that I want you to do is, when you set your goals, I want you to celebrate. Find a way to celebrate. So whether that goal is big or small, now it could be something like, Oh, I want to talk to three new people this week. That’s something you need to celebrate when you achieve that. And it’s not too small to celebrate. How are you gonna celebrate that? Are you gonna go out and buy yourself a fancy coffee from Starbucks? Are you gonna do, you know, order pizza in for the family? Like, what is the celebration that you wanna do? because it is once you set those goals out and you achieve them, their wins no matter how big or small they are.

Okay. Another thing I want you to do is make sure that you don’t focus on things that are not within your control. We can control things like our customer care, our own things that are our own efforts. So, you know, we can control how many people that we talk to. We can control how many, not even how many parties we book, but we can control how many people that we ask. And then that in turn will determine whether or not we’re getting the parties booked. You can’t expect to ask two people to host and have two parties. That’s just not how it works in this business. You know, you’re lucky if you ask 10 people in one person books. The same with sponsoring or recruiting, however you call it in your business, but don’t expect to ask one person and then have your team grow. You need to ask many to get that momentum going. And soon you’ll find that you’re going to be more natural at it. More people might be intrigued, but you always have to keep asking.

Okay. So again, focus on what you can control. I mean, the company is gonna put out incentives and initiatives and things like that. But again, you can’t control those things. You can work with them and you can do things that will help you grow your business using those tools. But you have to work on things that you can control. And the number one thing that…I want to say is that the number one thing I actually I should say that you can control is your consistency in this business. I see or I hear I shouldn’t say too many people making excuses about, oh, I was too busy. Oh, dinner ran late or oh, this or that. And yes, I get it. We all have life. But if you had a regular nine to five job and dinner ran late and you were supposed to be there at six o’clock and you’re still eating dinner at 5 30, you wouldn’t just not go to work because dinner ran late. If you were scheduled to go into work, you would be hustling and making sure that you got to work on time. And if you didn’t, what are the consequences? The consequences are going to be you probably won’t have that job for very long.

So make sure that you treat your business like a job if you want it to grow. So create that consistency, schedule your business hours in your calendar. And yes, they’re gonna be flexible. So, you know, if you can’t make it at 6.30, well, maybe slide it down to 6.45 because that gets you time to finish dinner and slide the dishes to the side and get back to them later, but get to work you scheduled that time, make sure that you get to work. That’s just one thing. It’s like the number one thing is consistency.

And the funny thing is I have a bad habit of scrolling reels. I absolutely love watching reels. And I was scrolling through and I came across this reel about a turtle and a rabbit or a hare. And they were They were in a race side by side. They each had their own lane. The turtle was marked consistency and the rabbit was marked motivation. Now they put them down and the rabbit took off and he was like eating up all the little clover on the ground. And then, you know, he was motivated to get to the next piece of clover. Well, once he got to the next piece of clover, he stopped and he ate it. And then maybe he went to the next piece and he ate it. But the. Turtle they put him down and his consistency, he was just going straight for that finish line. Ironically, the turtle wins because consistency won, consistency paid off because he wasn’t motivated to get to the next little carrot, let’s say. So consistency is a very, very, very big thing in working your business and…it’s the consistency is gonna allow you to not dwell so much on the comparison because you’re gonna be consistently doing your own business and you’re gonna be too busy to worry about what the other person is doing. So just work your business with consistency and you’ll see success, okay?

One thing I do wanna mention is that there is, I get so frustrated because Let’s say social media, social media is such a fake picture of reality. And I’m just going to put it out there. Like, trust me guys, people don’t look like, like, like they really look. There’s filters being used. Um, you know, you see all these posts about people earning all of this money and you don’t see what work is done behind the scenes. You don’t see all those sleepless nights. You don’t see. Um, you know, the hustle that they go through to get those paychecks. Um, and then, you know, you see people being recognized for some great things. And then you go and come on, you’ve done it, go and look at their social media and you’re going, okay, well, I could just do this, this, this, and this, and I could get their success. So you’re comparing and comparing what they’re doing on social media to be. The determination, like what determines their success in the business. But the number one thing that you don’t see through social media is what’s happening behind the scenes. I always refer back to this one question and I probably mentioned it before in one of the podcast episodes. But I was asked one day, somebody was talking about doing an in-person cooking class or an in-person party and how this person earned $200 commission or whatever it was during the time that they were there. And I’m like, well, how long were they there? And they said it was probably between two and three hours by the time they left their home and got back to their home. And I piped up and I said, okay, but if I had two or three hours on social media, I could make that same kind of money. And I was asked, what would you post to make this money? Because people think that it’s all in the post and pray method on social media. And I sort of chuckled when I was asked that. And I sort of said, I’m like, well, I wouldn’t post. I would reach out to people. I would have connections. I would make conversations. I would ask for the sale. I would do all the things that I would be doing in person, I’m just using my fingers to talk or, you know, I’m having conversations through voice message instead of face to face. It’s no different. I’m still talking to people.

So I want you to make sure that when you’re looking at people’s social media, don’t think that what they’re doing really is what’s driving their success. You don’t know how many people that they’ve already have in their following You don’t know how many customers that they already have who reorder from them on a monthly basis. You don’t know all of these stats. All you see is what you see on social. So just make sure that when you’re looking at that, don’t let it get you down. Use it as motivation. If you see something that they’ve posted, then well, maybe look at it and say, well, how can I take that and so that I could use it, never copy and paste. It’s not gonna work for you. Don’t copy and paste things because you’re not talking in your voice, in your words, you’re using their words and your customers don’t understand them. They know, like and trust you. So you need to make sure that it’s coming from you. And it’s, you know, it’s authentically coming from you. You need to be, you need to show up as you on social media in order for…your customers to follow you and buy from you and stick around and Introduce you to more people and bring people into your groups

All this stuff, but I just want to make sure that you know You know guys Comparison like I said at the beginning it is it is a natural thing. We all do it heck. I’m guilty of it all the time but I always get into my head when I get that comparison bug and say it’s like, okay, well, that’s not your lane, Lisa. Like you’re not, you don’t have the same carrots. Like you’re not a carrot chaser. These people are carrot chasers. They do everything that they’re doing to get that shiny thing that’s in front of them. This is something that that’s not you. You do your business. to help your customers, you do your business because you love doing your business and you do your business to earn a couple extra, couple hundred dollars extra a month and that’s okay. That’s what you do and I’m happy with doing what I do. So I want you guys to know that you can do anything that you wanna do. You could just put your mind to it. You can set your goals If you need help setting your goals, be sure to reach out to your upline. If you don’t have a supportive upline, then make sure you reach out to sidelines or people in the company, or heck, even reach out to other direct sales sellers in other companies. Everybody is here to support everybody in this business and there should be no competition. And guys, you could do this. You can make this business what you want it to be.

You just have to put your mind to it. You have to use what you see these people succeeding in as inspiration and not, don’t turn it into a jealousy thing. Use it to inspire you, to motivate you to do more. But the main thing is you need to stay consistent in your business and you need to do what you need to do to move the needle forward. So I hope this little, quick little episode helped you out because I know, especially at this time of year, we’re going to see a lot of people with high sales because they’re doing, you know, they might be doing more markets or they might have some amazing fundraisers or they got a contract to do gifts for like a big corporation or who knows what it is, but we’ll be seeing like some really, really high paychecks and don’t let that defeat you. because you can do great things too. You just gotta put your mind to it. And if you need to use that as inspiration, like for example, if you see somebody has a fundraiser, well maybe reach out to them and ask them a few questions about how they run their fundraiser. Maybe you could run a fundraiser too. You just need a little bit of the know-how to get it done. But like I said, if these people are so successful, I’m sure if you reached out to them and asked them a question, they wouldn’t mind, um, giving you a quick tip or two. So never be afraid to reach out and talk to people. Heck, that’s what this business is all about is to make sure that we’re connecting with people, meeting new people all the time. And remember, it doesn’t always have to be just a person in your own business. It could be somebody in direct sales because direct sales is direct sales is direct sales. You just take what they’re doing, tweak it to work with your business and your product. So guys, I hope you enjoyed this episode and we will see you back here for another episode of The Other 99%. Take care.
