Episode 74
What if your office was wherever you parked for the night?
That was Marcia Hopper’s reality for years—and in this week’s episode of The Other 99%, she shares how building a direct sales business from the road taught her some of the most valuable lessons about consistency, flexibility, and heart.
From RV life to her current chapter living in a home again, Marcia’s journey reminds us that success in direct sales isn’t about having a perfectly curated office or being glued to your phone 24/7. It’s about using the systems you have, staying true to your values, and giving yourself the freedom to grow—even when life looks different than expected.
🚐 Running a Business from the Road
Marcia and her family spent several years traveling in an RV, which meant her business had to be compact and portable. Her entire inventory fit inside a shoebox. Yep—a literal shoebox.
Because she didn’t want to carry loads of stock or manage constant shipping, Marcia made sure to align with a company that shipped directly to customers. This kept her business lean, mobile, and low-stress—something many direct sellers forget is even possible.
Takeaway: You don’t need a spare room full of products to be successful. You need the right systems—and a willingness to simplify.
🔁 Making a Big Company Switch—Without Starting From Scratch
When Marcia made the decision to change companies, it wasn’t without fear. But she didn’t let that fear stop her. She sent an honest email to her customers, explaining her shift, and invited them to join her in the next chapter.
Many of them did.
She didn’t have to reinvent the wheel. Marcia brought her systems with her—email, texting, scheduling—and simply adapted them to fit her new brand and product line.
Takeaway: When you understand the foundations of direct sales, you can take them with you anywhere. The relationship-building and consistency you’ve cultivated doesn’t disappear just because the logo on your business card changes.
🛠️ Systems That Keep Her Grounded
Marcia swears by:
- Project Broadcast for customer communication
- Oh My Hi for email and website management
- A physical planner to visually map out her weeks
- Native schedulers for social content (she keeps it simple!)
She schedules her entire week on Mondays and batches a month’s worth of daily content like “Question of the Day” or themed posts. If she’s traveling or has a low-Wi-Fi day, she doesn’t panic—because her systems are already doing the work.
Takeaway: Batching and scheduling = breathing room. Your systems should work for you so you don’t always have to be “on.”
💡 Advice for Movers—and Newbies
Marcia gave some brilliant advice for two types of sellers:
- For those on the move (like RVers or military families):
Batch and schedule whenever you do have Wi-Fi or downtime. That way, you don’t feel behind when life gets unpredictable. - For those brand new to direct sales:
Don’t get caught up in the “I should” trap. (“I should do Reels, I should send 3 emails, I should be everywhere…”) Instead, pick what works for you and do it well.
Her husband’s advice? “Quit should-ing on yourself.” 😂
Takeaway: Know your capacity. It’s okay to focus on just a few key tools or platforms while you get your footing.
😩 When You Want to Quit
Yes, even experienced leaders like Marcia have had moments where they wanted to throw in the towel.
Her guiding question in those moments?
“Would I miss this more than what I’m frustrated with right now?”
Time and again, the answer was yes. She might take a short break—but she didn’t quit.
Because at the end of the day, the community she built and the relationships she’d formed mattered more than the occasional bad week.
Takeaway: It’s okay to step back. Just don’t count yourself out forever.
✨ The Power of Peace in Business
This year, Marcia’s personal mantra has been “It is well with my soul.” She picked that phrase before a big shift happened, but it’s carried her through with peace and clarity.
She’s in a season where she’s not chasing rank or recognition—she’s chasing health, wholeness, and helping a few new people every month fall in love with the products she believes in.
Whether it’s going to the gym every weekday or sending one thoughtful email a week, Marcia’s redefining success on her own terms.
Takeaway: Your goals get to change. Peace is a valid measure of success.

Marcia’s story is a reminder that your business doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s. You don’t have to be in the top 1% to be thriving. You just need to stay grounded, consistent, and willing to grow.
